Especially a genuine smile.

A smile says…

I’m approachable.  I’m ready to listen.  I’m here for you.  I’m having fun!

The other day, our family went into a local PetSmart store.  We were looking at tropical fishes when a store clerk approached us.  He gave us a nice smile and asked us if we needed help.

Let me tell you that normally when a store clerk approaches me, I tell them I’m just looking.  I’m not sure that most of them really want to help me.  But this one did.

Maybe it’s the way he smiled that showed us he was ready to help.  He asked us what we needed and told us to take our time looking.  Also to let him know when we made our choice.  Talk about phenomenal customer service!  We felt very comfortable telling him what we needed.

What has been your experience with store clerks who smile?

I may not need any help but if their smile and approach feels genuine then I might chat with them for a minute to reinforce that I appreciated their kindness:).

I agree, when a store clerk genuinely smiles at me as they approach or talk to me, then I get the feeling that they are sincerely interested in helping me, and not just doing it because they have to.

Good point. When you feel they sincerely want to help, you know they’re not just doing it because they have to. It feels so different and much more welcoming. Have a great week ahead!

Hey Jinnia, Thanks for stopping by my blog. I definitely think a smile says so much. And you can tell from different smiles if its genuine or not. I like assertive clerks, but if I say hey I’m just looking, let me look, don’t bombard me.

Stop by my Blog again Jinnia and add your button to my blog roll if you haven’t yet.

Hi Jinnia, I’ve been at the beach for a few days. Thanks for the comments. I love store clerks who smile, they make me smile.

  • Ashley

Aw, this is so nice! Great point, too. Smiles are so inviting and definitely help to put you at east. Maybe his smile was different because it seemed genuine, not like “Oh boy, more commission!”

A Smile is so powerful! It really lets people know that you care and your heart is open. They are very inviting. This is a super post Jinnia. You know I love smiles. I would love for you to come back to Mama’s Little Chick and click on the link I added at the bottom of my Cherished Moments post. I started to cry when I read it. It was close to my heart and I was sad that she did not get the bloglove she should get for that post. I would love for you to go and visit her my friend and support her a bit and bring one of your smiles. Have a great night Jinnia!

I wish I got more smiles from store clerks. The last time I was at the grocery store the check-out girl told me she hated her job and she was probably going to quit!

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

Yes, you can tell. Heather, thanks for inviting me to your blog again, I stopped by :) Hope you have a great night, my friend.

Yes! Thanks Mama Hen! I stopped by Tiffany’s blog and gave her some bloglove. What she shared is definitely close to your heart and I was sorry to hear of her loss.

Wherever I go, I am approached by people. As people walk by they smile at me. My family can’t believe it: if there is a group of people, I’m always the one the person goes to.

(In Turkey I was swarmed by people selling trinkets outside a tourist attraction. They all knew it was me in the center without even seeing me.)

Why? I’m usually smiling and it makes me approachable. I also make eye contact with everyone like a “country bumpkin” not used to the city ways of ignoring everyone who passes by!

Thanks so much for your kinds words on my “Cherished Memories” post.

You’re welcome :) Tiffany, that post was precious and I hope you have a great day!

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

Cassiopeia, I love how you described this – I can picture you being swarmed by people! What you’re doing, keep it up! We need more “country bumpkins” in the cities :) I may have gotten used to city ways but I sure love small town ways and wouldn’t mind a “relational makeover”.

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

No problem :) I figured you meant ease. I hope you have a great day Ashley!

a smile says SO much to people you interact with each day! Sometimes I think I’m guilty of smiling TOO much, if that’s even possible??! I try to keep a smile on my face, because sometimes a smile can turn someone’s life around in some small way. I know when a store clerk is NOT smiling, I feel intimidated and ready to hurry up, pay and leave. A smile says A LOT about a person :)

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

You can never smile too much :) I love it when I hear about people who love to smile – it can really lift someone else up! Thanks for being one of them Marissa!

  • Eastlyn

Funny you should blog about smiles, Jinnia. I’ve been thinking about them for a few days, now. I find that I smile at everyone because I’d rather smile at a stranger that I thought was someone I knew than fail to smile at a friend whom I didn’t recognize. You never know when your smile may make all the difference to someone who is having a bad day. Here’s hoping you give and receive lots of smiles every day! -EW

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

I like that, Eastlyn – smile at a stranger that you thought you knew rather than fail to smile at a friend you didn’t recognize. That can be made into a plaque or some reminder to hang up in the house.

Ahh… the power of a smile! I know in sales that you are encouraged to smile when speaking to a customer on the phone…. the energy of a smile radiates as goodwill too.
    Love this one.

Yes! Isn’t that amazing how someone on the other end of the phone can also sense the energy of a smile? Thanks for your thoughts.
