I was recently asked to share how I balance my family and work time. So I want to address that question here, thanks Chris for asking. Your question helped me to reflect more about how I balance and to bring it to sharper focus.
Disclaimer: I am not a naturally organized person. I was born with a drive to start projects and have them strewn all over the place. But over the years, I have learned to become more organized. I have to, as a mother and entrepreneur, and it has been an amazing ride. I hope that encourages some of you, as I know it can be frustrating at times.
The first thing I have learned to do is I have learned to use my calendar – ideally to plan 3 months in advance my family activities – like the kids’ school activities, weekly dates with my hubby, birthday parties, etc. Then every week I schedule business appointments on weekday mornings that my kids are in school. At night after the kids are in bed, hubby and I talk, then I work online & other administrative tasks. On the weekends, our family takes either Saturday or Sunday to rest – a break from the M-F routine. We try to have a nice Family Fun Day outdoors if it’s nice weather. Of course, with summer here now, it’s time to plan the next 3 months.
How I Balance – very carefully & deliberately. It’s very much a teeter-tooter, see-saw type of thing. Some days it’s heavier on one side (family) and other days it’s heavier on the other (work). I was recently reminded the great need to focus on the Fulcrum. Maybe this is where the analogy breaks down but certainly there’s eternal value in focusing on the Source that gives us the right vision & perspective from which to work. My aim is to be so focused on that Fulcrum that I am well-balanced with minimal teeter-tooter effect…
