Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. ~The Ancient Book

Do you know anybody that, when their mind is set on something, you know it’s made up and nothing can change it?  On our date on Saturday night, Hubby and I got to talk about things we don’t normally talk about with the kids around.  Serious things.

We both realize we can be pretty set on something we believe in.  We like to call it conviction; others like to call it stubbornness :)

And ever since our beach house vacation, I’ve been itching to find more times of peace and quiet.  In our busy society, we have so many things on our plate that doing less sometimes seems impossible.

But slowing down may not necessarily mean doing less (though it can certainly help).  What if slowing down simply meant taking an extra 15 minutes or less per day, to center yourself so that when you go about what you need to do for that day, you’ll get more done in less time?  Wouldn’t that be cool?

A big secret lies in setting our minds on things above. But what does this mean? If you’re not religious, what would things above mean other than heavenly things? No matter what you believe, would you agree there are things in this world you don’t see with your eyes or touch with your hands? Intangible, sometimes abstract notions like vision, purpose, faith?

I’m actually taking a step of faith in even sharing this with you. It was not one of my planned blog topics when I did Day 11 of the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog.  I was inspired by Casey over at One Day At A Time.  Sometimes my God has a way of surprising me, and helping me, to overcome my fears (and writers’ block, though I don’t consider myself a true writer) – so that I can write from what is truly in the depths of my heart and soul.

When I let myself get too busy, I lose focus and my priorities go out the window.  My mind began to be set on what I needed to do, the people I needed to get back to, the posts I needed to write, etc.

Prior to this, when I woke up in the morning, I would instantly give thanks and feel energized, ready to start the day.  I’d feel centered and everything flowed from a place of love and deep conviction.  That’s my God working in and through me.  I want that again.

What about you?  What do you think about right when you wake up in the morning?

Love love love this post! I agree….society almost teaches us that if we aren't busy, we are lazy! —but taking those few minutes or more to focus on gratitude or prayer or heavenly things increases my productivity for the day… and I am a much more positive person to be around. It also helps me to worry less, have less anxiety and gets my mind of things that are creative and fulfilling.

    Thanks for the great reminder!

Seems like we were both wanting to set our sights on Heavenly things as we start our weeks! I pray that the Lord blesses you for your faithfulness to Him and thank you for reminding us all to focus our hearts on what matters most! Blessings!

HI Jinnia, thoughtful post! I find that I'm not so crazy busy with physical tasks but rather my mind has been going a million miles a minute lately. I feel like I can't do one thing well my mind is so preoccupied. I need to get back to that calm, content feeling….hope all is well!

The first thing I do when I wake up is sit on the edge of my bed and pray. But for me, I have to be careful that I “set my mind on things above” rather than just spit out a “take care of this for me” list. One way I find serenity as I go with the flow of the day, the other way I fool myself into thinking I'm ready to face the day!

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

Hmmm, that's a good point. Serenity to go with the flow of the day is great to have! Sometimes isn't it hard to know whether you're ready to face the day?

Hey TV, thanks! I think your mind is amazing! You have such deep thoughts about life and when you pen them to your blog posts, they really help others think through important issues in their lives too. That's why I love your blog so much. Do you find that helps you be calm and content when you write posts, journal, etc.?

Good question….I can't answer with certaintly. What is interesting is that something can be bothering me for months and one word from someone will silence the concern in my head. You have an award waiting for you…..

  • http://jinnialow.com Jinnia

I do know what you mean…today I thought about how my journal entries are different from blog entries. That is interesting that one word from someone can settle a concern for you, is it usually directly or indirectly addressed? Thank you so much for the award! I'm grateful for a blog friend like you…
