waves crashing rock low res0001Sometimes my friends confess to me, “I’m lazy.”

It cracks me up – then it concerns me.  It cracks me up because they say it like a funny joke.  It concerns me because like persistent waves crashing on the rocks, the more they call themselves lazy, the lazier they can become.  Interesting how that works.

Do you know anyone who calls themselves lazy?  Do you?

Calling yourself lazy can stem from either one of two things:

1.  It’s an excuse to put off doing something you need to do.

2.  You really believe deep down that you’re lazy.

Either way, it hinders you.  Gets in the way of everything else you’re doing.

One day a friend told me, “I’m just too lazy.”

I couldn’t believe my ears!  He’s actually very responsible, diligent and helps his wife with housework even when he’s super tired!

So I said, “No, you’re not!  Where do you get that from?”

He tells me why.  His parents had told him that all his life.  Not only is it not true, it’s only in his mind because it’s been repeated far too often far too long.

So I declared, “THAT’S where it’s from!  You’re not even lazy – look at what you do.  You work everyday, you provide for your family, you even help your wife do housework when you’re tired.  You can’t say you’re lazy.”

At the core, he knows this.  But he’s been making agreement with what he’s heard as a little boy.  “You’re lazy.”

Well it’s time to empty that word and speak a different one.  It’s time to stop making agreement with our past and start making agreement with what we want to be.

So instead making agreement with laziness, let’s make agreement with diligence, a good work ethic, responsibility and integrity.

Instead of, “I’m lazy!” say “I’m diligent!”

Say it everyday and it’ll be YOUR diligent waves shaping those rocks into beautiful designs.

I believe that's true of almost anything that people may tell us. We start to believe what people tell us we are. If it's repeated often enough, we may believe what they say is true, even when it's not (positive or negative).

It sounds like you're very aware of this…thanks for your comment! It's unfortunate when it happens and the people who say these things don't know how much it affects that person. Have you had experience with this?

You're right…words have a powerful effect. You brought up a good point about what's left unsaid. I believe in the context you mentioned the silence can have the same effect as damaging words. I heard it takes 10+ positive comments to equate 1 negative comment. Something like that. I appreciate your thoughts on this.
