Do you ever have a hard time ‘being yourself’? Have you ever thought that people won’t find you interesting or worthy of their attention? This is a deep matter, but it is not a new problem; people throughout history have wrestled with this issue. Many people deep down inside truly desire the approval of an important person in their life – such as their father or mother, but have either never received it nor accepted it. They may spend their adult years working hard to prove themselves to these people, yet the cycle is not easily broken. Whatever they do is never enough.
Why is this important to know or think about? Isn’t it a negative thing to focus on? Does it really affect a person that much?
So what does it mean to be yourself anyway?
In today’s society there is so much noise and busyness that it can be a challenge to break through to the side of peace and stillness. If you cannot be yourself, one major reason could be there’s a huge hindrance in this area of being approved by your parents. It is crucial that you are aware if this is a hindrance in your life. Why? Because it colors everything you do, and I mean everything. No matter how hard you try to run away from it, focus on positive thoughts, etc. this one barrier alone can block a person from truly being who they are designed to be and doing what they do with true excellence. If you want to be free to be who you are, and be the best you can be, here are a few things you can start with:
1. Do some soul-searching and praying. Find a relaxing place to quiet your mind and be still. Take a few deep cleansing breaths. Give yourself at least 15 minutes to do this each day.
2. Realize that your own self-talk has a profound affect on you everyday. Become aware of what you say to yourself regularly and write down any trends you notice.
3. Ask yourself some tough questions. Such as, who are you doing this all for? Or, when you do something, are you trying to prove yourself to someone important?
This is just the beginning. Many people do not know who they are, but it could be because there is so much going on and life moves at such a fast pace, that they don’t give themselves a chance to know themselves. If you want to be free from worrying about what other people think of you, then get to work on knowing yourself better. Those 3 steps above will give you a great beginning to becoming more aware of yourself.
