Lately I’ve been thinking about how I’m loving my family.

And I admit I can use some improvement…

I was reading a Mom-Monday blog post from Genny Heikka which brought tears to my eyes as I listened to the song she had posted.

Because of busyness and recent happenings in our family, I sensed a bit of loneliness from everyone, including myself.  But I didn’t do much about it.

The song intensified and brought these feelings to surface for me.

It reminded me how much I treasure our family in my heart, but was I loving them the way I’m called to love them?

Many years ago, I attempted my first website with Yahoo’s geocities, which doesn’t exist anymore.  But I remember one of the topics that was very important to me was, “Home is where the heart is.”

It was such a high priority for me to not neglect my family in order to chase my dreams.  It formed the foundation upon which to build anything.

Safe Haven group came over today and we had a discussion about what motivates us, based on the book “12 Christian Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy.”  The assumption #8 was “Shoulds are good.”

But what motivates us?

What motivates me to want to love my family?

Is it that I want to be a good mom?  If I try to love my family out of guilt or fear of failing as a mom, then something will backfire.  It has.

Is it that I want the people I care about to feel loved, accepted – not alone or hungry for love?  Then I’m motivated by love, not by guilt or fear of doing something wrong.

Here’s the song that moved me to tears…

I want my hubby to know he’s important to me.

I want my kids to know their Mommy delights in them just the way they are.

What about for you?  What makes you want to love your family?
