Today I had a unique opportunity to meet and be-friend a mom – and I missed it. I still met her, but I missed the chance to chat with her and get to know her – which I love doing. Let me tell you why I’m sharing this.
You see, I was in the middle of doing something I thought was important. I was sending an email, then finishing my hot herbal tea because I was starting to feel sick. Quite legitimate tasks, I thought. In the back of my mind, I knew that my husband was waiting for the mom who was coming to buy our Zooper double stroller that we had listed on Craigslist. I knew that they were just about ready to meet and look at the stroller.
I would have loved to have been there to share in the moment of showing the mom the features (which my husband did a great job of), but more importantly, the chance to talk with her and ask her about her children. I would have loved that. But that did not enter my mind as I was busy writing my email.
The reason I am sharing this is simple: if we don’t want to miss a rare chance to meet someone new and build a relationship, we must be alert and be clear on our priorities. This experience will remind me to keep my personal mission statement in my head, ready for any opportunities: Inspiring people to live meaningful & fulfilling lives, Encouraging people to build great relationships, and Empowering people to be creative like a little child.
